Sexual
and Gender Diversity
It
can be difficult and painful to be fully open about oneself
for those of us who identify as different from the norm. Add to this
the complicated layers of societal prejudice that exist against
sexual and gender minorities, and it becomes even more
challenging to operate in the world without confronting stereotypes
or misunderstandings. If you identify as any part of the lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, genderqueer, questioning, and
intersex community, you may have faced any of a number of
problems being treated as an equal. Things that others take for
granted, such as walking hand in hand with your partner, raising
children with your same-sex partner, or using gender-specified
restrooms, are often outright denied or only tolerated. Many people
face ostracism from peers and family members, and feel
isolated or unsupported. All of this can lead to a great deal of
stress and unresolved feelings of shame, anger, fear, confusion,
and sadness, among others.
If
you are going through challenges regarding your sexual orientation or
gender identification, it is possible to get help. I offer a
compassionate, safe, and confidential space in the process of
working through these issues. Together we can explore who you are,
who you want to love, and where you want to be in the
world. I know from personal and professional experience how sensitive
and complicated it can be to come to terms with your identity.
It takes time, commitment, and support to know internally how
you want to identify and feel comfortable being open about yourself,
your partners, or your chosen family unit. Ultimately, it is
important to recognize that you are not alone, and many people
share similar experiences. My approach can support you to build a
sense of self-acceptance and step into your own
self-empowerment.
